Friends Profile: Alexander Koops
Climbing Instructor, Energy Booster and The Man behind the scenes...
I was born in Nigeria and lived there through High School. After graduating with a BA from Calvin College and receiving a Masters from CU, Boulder, I taught for one year in New Mexico, where I met (re-met) my wife (Shaelyn). Together, we hiked a 14,000 foot mountain in Colorado for our first "date" and ate my birthday cupcake (a surprise from my wife) at the top. Eight months later, we got hitched during spring break and lived out the rest of the school year together!

I am the husband and cheerleader of Shaelyn Koops. I teach music education at Azusa Pacific University, conduct the APU symphonic band, and founded and direct the Azusa Conservatory Community Music School. At the Blue Chair I designed and built the climbing wall and help coach climbing parties. I also help lead the drum ensemble classes and offer my hand during various musical and non-musical events such as kite-making and music composing workshops.
I have been teaching at APU for 10 years now but enjoy numerous other activities as well. I like kite flying, camping, mountaineering, music theory, rock climbing, mountain biking and running. Attending concerts and operas, drinking coffee/tea at Classic Coffee with my wife, practicing my French Horn, exploring with the kids and tandem biking with my wife also provide much enjoyment. A solo 37 mile run through the Grand Canyon is the most outrageous thing I have ever done physically. But equally outrageous was when during my career as a middle school music teacher I encouraged my band members to secretly bring in bags of marshmallows to school, sneak down the hallway to the study hall room and begin a marshmallow war!
So what are my favorites?
Symphony -Bruckner 7
.Opera - Puccini's Turandot
.Movie - Rat Race
(my wife has never heard me laugh so loud).
Piece of music - Mozart's Grand Partita K361
Favorite inspirational book - Pure Gold
(biography of Eric Liddle). And, I can wiggle my ears!
