Friends Profile: Shaelyn Theule Koops Owner, Manager and Event Planner
You see her smiling behind the counter when you first walk through the doors of Blue Chair, or reading a story to a room full of children, but how much do you really know about Shaelyn…the inspiration behind everything you see, hear and do at Blue Chair Children’s Books? In her own words…

I was born in Nigeria to adventurous teachers, to a father who instilled the love of literature and children, and a mother who taught me courage and creativity. There I lived for 8 years and first met my husband! (He is over there on the right between his sister and I). My family and I eventually moved to Tokyo, Japan, where I lived for 10 years and graduated from High School. While attending Calvin College, earning a degree in English and obtaining a Teaching Credential, I worked at a children’s bookstore called “Pooh’s Corner.” The seeds to own my own children’s bookstore were planted!
Not one to settle down too quickly and being determined not to marry “just anyone,” I taught English, Drama, and worked as a librarian at schools in Honduras, Japan, New Mexico (where I met my husband for the second time as a grown man and tied the knot), and finally Ontario, CA. After giving birth to our first child and obtaining a few health issues, my classroom teaching career ended and my “bookstore teaching career” began. Blessed with an adventurous and healthy life as a youngster, I am now appreciating the art of “settling down” and am enjoying raising my two children.
Stories have always been my one constant companion. I also enjoy exploring, rock climbing, swimming, tennis, tea, gardens, teaching and seeing a smile creep along someone’s face. Most outrageous thing I ever did - Marry my husband. Information Tidbit - I worked as a “Tripping (Hiking/Backpacking) Leader” at a children’s camp on the East Coast for a few years and was trained by the AMC (American Mountaineering Club) in Wilderness Rescue/First Aide. Favorite place - Lake District (England). Favorite book - Please don’t ask. Favorite movie - “Lord of the Rings.” Favorite TV Show - We have not received TV service in over 3 years and do not miss it! Favorite song - Serenade K361 by Amadeus Mozart. Favorite food - Miya (Nigerian dish). One item on my bucket list - bike around Ireland. Thank you all, for Blue Chair.
